Today marked an extraordinary milestone for Nest Community Shelter; signage with our new name and logo was placed on the building. The new sign replaces the historic and much-loved signage from the former Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Michigan City’s west side. Nest Community Shelter has lovingly and sympathetically restored the 100+-year-old former Catholic church to repurpose the building as La Porte County’s only emergency shelter. While the building no longer operates as a Catholic parish, the mission lives on in the warmth, generosity, and support for which the unhoused population of our city is cared for.

The signage is a culmination of many years of hard work and dedication by staff and volunteers and follows the shelter’s rebranding in late 2023. Formerly known as Interfaith Community Pads, the name Nest was specifically chosen to more closely represent the function of the shelter as a temporary place of rest and care. This new, vibrant signage on the front of our shelter serves as a beacon of hope for those experiencing homelessness. It also serves as a reminder to the larger community of Nest’s mission to support unhoused individuals with dignity, determination, and dedication as those individuals work toward healing. The signage lets those in the community who need Nest’s support know that they’ve arrived at more than temporary shelter and a warm meal; hope and healing are held within our walls.

Legacy Sign Group Installing Our New Sign.

As we continue to support the need for our services in our community, we hope that this new signage serves as a shining source of love, compassion, and care that transforms despair into optimism and inspiration for a healthy future. The logo, which now sits proudly on the front of our building, was carefully chosen for our organization. A Nest is a temporary shelter for those seeking refuge until inhabitants are able to fly successfully on their own. The bird that sits in our Nest logo is meant to convey optimism, hope, and care as she flies from her Nest.

We want to thank all those who made this day possible so that we may shine our beacon of hope with this signage on our building. This process has been years in the making, and with that, we recognize all of the love, care, dedication, and support that has brought us to this milestone as an organization. We would like to thank Legacy Sign Group for designing the layout of the signage and for installing it on our building so that we may be a symbol of hope within our community.
