For the past twenty-five years, Nest has provided shelter to those in need every night, without fail. When guests step through the threshold of the Nest Community Shelter in Michigan City, they know they’ll receive a hot meal and a safe place to sleep. This sleep got easier this past month, especially for those with mobility issues, as a generous grant from Howmet Aerospace Foundation allowed Nest to invest in elevated beds for the first time in the shelter’s history.
Nest Community Shelter relied on purpose-built mattress pads made especially for emergency shelter since its earliest days. As the shelter evolved and found its permanent home in the former Sacred Heart Catholic Church building on Michigan City’s historic west side, this was always the goal, but funding it has been a challenge.
“We are so grateful to the Howmet Aerospace Foundation for this incredible grant that has allowed us to purchase these beds for shelter guests. This has been on our hearts for a long time, but the investment was significant, and that has been the roadblock for us until now. These new beds are so badly needed for our guests. Everyone deserves the dignity of a bed for the evening.” Said, Harrison Holtkamp, Executive Director of Nest Community Shelter.
Fifteen bunk beds will provide thirty beds for the men’s floor, and sixteen single beds are now located on the women’s floor of the shelter.

A team of community members and some shelter guests worked together over two days to build and set up the beds in the shelter. These new beds allow Nest’s guests with mobility issues to get off the floor. This new bed configuration also allows for more defined dining, meeting, and sleeping areas for Nest’s guests.
“This grant is a beautiful gift and an incredibly special way to mark our 25th Anniversary year. These beds represent our permanent roots here in Michigan City, and we are honored to continue the work we do with greater dignity and comfort for our neighbors in need.” Holtkamp said.
