At Nest, we believe that every person who walks through our doors carries within them the potential to soar. A year ago, we launched an initiative that embodies this belief: Flight School. Today, we’re proud to share how this program is not only changing lives but also breaking the cycle of homelessness. But this story is not about us; it’s about the support of this program from the community and those who are supported by this program.

Breaking the Cycle: A Year of Proven Results

We’re witnessing something remarkable: our guests are no longer just finding temporary solutions; they’re building lasting stability. The one-on-one partnership model is proving to be a game-changer in helping reduce recidivism and helping people stay housed, employed, and connected to their communities.

More Than Just a Program, It’s a Partnership

Flight School isn’t just another service we offer; it’s a revolutionary approach to supporting our guests. At its heart, this program pairs trained community volunteers with our guests in one-on-one partnerships designed to navigate the often-complex web of support services available to them.

Our dedicated case manager leads the training for these volunteers, ensuring they’re equipped not just with knowledge but with the compassion and understanding needed to walk alongside someone on their journey to stability. Together, our case manager and volunteers create a collaborative network of care that surrounds each guest with the support they deserve.

The Long-Term Vision Becomes Reality

We know that navigating social services, housing assistance, job placement programs, and healthcare systems can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re already facing the daily challenges of being unhoused. Over the past year, Flight School has demonstrated that when someone has a dedicated advocate, they not only survive but also thrive within these systems.

Our trained volunteers serve as more than guides; they become trusted companions who demonstrate to our guests that they are valued, that they matter, and that they are not walking this path alone. This sustained relationship is what makes the difference between temporary help and permanent change. Sometimes, the most powerful thing we can offer is simply listening to individuals when they need it most.

A Lasting Impact

The beauty of Flight School extends far beyond our shelter walls. For our volunteers, this program offers something precious: the opportunity to create lasting, meaningful change in another person’s life. These aren’t fleeting interactions; they’re relationships built on trust, respect, and shared hope for the future.

For our organization, Flight School allows us to extend our reach and deepen our impact. While our case manager brings her professional expertise and years of experience, our volunteers bring fresh perspectives, diverse backgrounds, and additional hands to help. Together, they create a support system that’s both comprehensive and deeply personal.

Why “Flight School”?

The name Flight School reflects our fundamental belief about every person we serve. We don’t see broken individuals who need fixing; we see people who need the right runway, the proper guidance, and someone cheering them on as they prepare for takeoff for a happy and healthy future.

Every guest who enters our doors is on a journey toward a new chapter: one marked by safe housing, stable employment, renewed relationships, improved health, and restored hope. Flight School provides the support structure needed to make that journey not just possible, but successful.

Celebrating Our Wins

As we reflect on Flight School’s success, we’re filled with pride about the lives that have been transformed, both our guests and our volunteers. We’ve created a community where everyone has a role to play in lifting each other up, where no one has to face their challenges alone, and where a better future becomes not just a dream, but a sustainable reality.

We’ve witnessed firsthand that when people have consistent, caring support that extends beyond their initial crisis, they’re significantly more likely to maintain their independence and avoid returning to being unhoused. Flight School isn’t just helping people leave our shelter—it’s helping them remain housed for the long term.

At Nest Community Shelter, we believe everyone deserves the chance to soar and we know that’s only possible when individuals reconnect to their community.
