Did you know that Nest is primarily staffed with trained volunteers? As a small shelter, our ability to provide paid staff is extremely limited, leaving us to rely on our dedicated volunteer base. Community members, young and old, give their time and talents daily, making our work at Nest possible. From kitchen staff, meal planners, case workers, and overnight staff to those who do laundry and mop floors, it truly takes a community of support to make our small shelter work.
We could not provide the services we do and make a long-lasting impact on the lives of our guests without community volunteer support. Today, we want to focus on what volunteering at Nest can provide for you as a current or potential volunteer.
Embarking on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth: Volunteering at Nest offers unique opportunities to grow as you support Nest through giving of your time. It’s a chance to harness your skills, talents, and creativity to make a tangible difference in the lives of our guests. From honing leadership and communication skills to gaining a newfound sense of purpose, volunteering at Nest provides a fertile ground for you to explore your strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations. Moreover, stepping into diverse roles within our volunteer community broadens your perspectives, resilience, and problem-solving abilities.
Building Stronger Communities: At its core, volunteering is about building and strengthening communities. Whether through organizing community events, supporting local initiatives, or advocating for social change, volunteers play a pivotal role in creating cohesive and resilient societies. By fostering collaboration, inclusivity, and a sense of belonging, volunteering nurtures vibrant communities where individuals thrive and support one another through life’s challenges. Volunteering at Nest, helping support those working to recover from experiencing homelessness, will have a multi-generational impact on our local communities.
Cultivating Empathy and Compassion: Volunteering can encourage individuals to step outside their comfort zones and immerse themselves in diverse experiences. Volunteering at Nest allows for the opportunity to learn more about the complex issues surrounding those experiencing homelessness in our community. By beginning to understand these complex factors, such as a lack of affordable housing in our area, access to mental health services, and other factors, as an educated community, we can begin to provide tangible solutions to these pressing issues in our community with empathy and compassion.
Enhancing Mental and Physical Well-being: We have witnessed first-hand the power of volunteering in our shelter. When you give of your time or talent at Nest, it is not only for our guests but also for the volunteers themselves. Research has proven that individuals engaging in altruistic activities have been linked to have reduced stress levels, increased happiness, and improved overall well-being. The sense of fulfillment derived from making a positive impact on others releases endorphins, often referred to as the “helper’s high,” which boosts mood and lowers the risk of depression.
Develop a Deep Sense of Belonging and Connection: Volunteering at Nest transcends geographical, cultural, and generational boundaries, fostering meaningful connections that enrich lives. Whether it’s bonding with fellow volunteers over shared goals and values or forming deep relationships with those served, volunteering at Nest creates a sense of belonging and interconnectedness. These connections not only provide emotional support but also expand your social networks, opening doors to new opportunities and experiences.
The benefits of volunteering at Nest Community Shelter are far-reaching and profound, shaping individuals and communities in remarkable ways. Beyond the acts of service themselves, volunteering at Nest provides a greater understanding of the complex issues surrounding homelessness, fosters personal growth, builds stronger communities, enhances well-being, and cultivates meaningful connections. Volunteering at Nest Community Shelter hast the ability to truly change lives for the better.
