Both men were honored with inaugural service awards in recognition of their service to Nest Community Shelter and the unhoused community.

MICHIGAN CITY, INDIANA—JULY 30, 2024—Nest Community Shelter is proud to announce the creation of two new awards recognizing exceptional service and dedication to the Nest and its mission. The Fred Weiss Award and the Ed Merrion Award have been established to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the shelter, its guests, and the community. Both men were honored and presented with awards named in their honor last night at Nest Community Shelter’s annual Appreciation and Recognition Dinner.

Fred Weiss, the inaugural recipient of the award bearing his name, was honored for demonstrating unwavering commitment to Nest Community Shelter for nearly two decades. Never missing a Friday night shift through his church that supported the early days of Nest, when the organization was a PADS program, Fred has been a constant presence in the men’s program, offering comfort and hope to countless guests during challenging overnight hours.

Ed Merrion, who was also honored and presented with an award in his name at last night’s dinner, dedicated over 20 years to the shelter and has been there since the organization’s inception. As a founding board member, Ed played a crucial role in securing the shelter’s permanent location at the historic Sacred Heart Church. His involvement extends beyond leadership, regularly volunteering for overnight shifts and advocating for affordable housing in the broader community.

“Fred and Ed embody the spirit of selfless service that is at the heart of our mission,” said Harrison Holtkamp, Executive Director of Nest Community Shelter. “Their dedication has not only impacted the lives of our guests but has also inspired our staff and volunteers. These awards will serve as a lasting tribute to their legacies and encourage others to follow in their footsteps of compassion and commitment.”

Both awards aim to recognize individuals who have shown exceptional service to Nest Community Shelter and will serve as an inspiration for future generations of volunteers.
