It is with profound sadness that we share news of the passing of Thomas Beck (affectionately known as T-Bone), a beloved volunteer who developed and led our AA program with unwavering dedication and compassion. His sudden departure leaves an immense void in our community, yet his spirit continues to inspire and guide those on the path of recovery.

T-Bone’s impact on our shelter extended far beyond running meetings. He created a space where individuals felt safe to share their struggles and victories, offering wisdom and an understanding that transcended judgment.

Nest Assistant Director Janelle Knowlton said, “T-Bone was truly an extraordinary man whose kindness and compassion left an indelible mark on our community. His dedication to volunteering at Nest for the past three years and his leadership in running an AA meeting here were testaments to his unwavering commitment to helping others. He had a unique ability to connect with those around him, offering support and understanding when it was needed most.

“His warmth and genuine care for the homeless community inspired all of us and brought hope to many. T-Bone’s legacy will continue to shine through the lives he touched, and we are forever grateful for the time he shared with us.”  -Janelle Knowlton

Abigail Stewart, Nest Case Manager, echoed Janelle’s sentiment when she spoke about the remarkable man that T-Bone was. Abigail had this to say, “T-Bone was an extraordinary volunteer who brightened our days with his warm smile as he began each shift. T-bone would jokingly say to the other volunteers, “It’s time to clock in and get paid,” even though he had never received monetary compensation. His true reward came from the heartfelt connections he fostered—sharing stories, remembering names, and leaving an indelible mark on all of us. T-Bone was the driving force behind Nest’s very first Alcoholics Anonymous group, guiding both guests and the broader community toward a transformative path of sobriety and hope. His legacy of compassion and dedication will always be remembered.”

“God Grant me the serenity to accept things I cannot change, the courage to change the

things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” – Abigail Stewart

T-Bone left a long legacy of service by providing guidance and steps to recovery for so many, thus giving those who worked in the program a new lease on life. Before coming to Nest, T-Bone led the Alcoholics Anonymous group at the local prison. For a period of time, T-Bone led both programs at the prison and Nest Community Shelter. During COVID-19, T-Bone’s work shifted primarily to Nest Community Shelter. From that point on, he became a regular and dedicated member of the Nest Community Shelter team. He set up Nest’s own regular A.A. meeting serving our guests and our community.

Even in his absence, T-Bone’s presence remains palpable in our building. His legacy lives on in the countless individuals he guided toward recovery, in the hope he instilled, and in the community he helped build. The seeds of strength and resilience he planted continue to grow and flourish.

To his family, friends, and loved ones, we extend our deepest condolences. We share in your grief and celebrate the privilege of having known such an extraordinary individual. T-Bone’s memory will forever remain a blessing to our shelter and all whose lives he touched.

His story reminds us that one person’s dedication to service can create ripples of transformation that continue long after they’re gone. In honor of his memory, we remain committed to carrying forward his mission of compassion, support, and hope.

Our Executive Director, Harrison Holtkamp, had this to say about T-Bone’s Passing, “Our guests deeply respected him for being a real person. He was this genuine south-side tough guy with a massive heart. He treated our guests with dignity and respect, and in return, they wanted to do better to make him proud. He taught us all about wants and needs and was a vital member of our team. To say that he was a fantastic person would be an understatement. His sudden loss has left a massive impact on our entire staff, volunteers, and guests. Our mission now is to honor his legacy by continuing on the A.A. program he created and supporting those who wish to walk in sobriety. T-Bone’s presence will be forever felt within our organization. We send our deepest condolences to his friends and family. Even in T-Bone’s passing, he still made a positive impact on our work as he asked that in lieu of flowers, donations were made to Nest Community Shelter.”
