This is an update from a story that many of you followed earlier this year. We are so pleased to be able to share a happy ending to this story.
When J.W. first stepped through Nest’s doors over this past Memorial Day Weekend with her injured dog —her only friend and companion in the world— as a community, we witnessed both heartbreak and the incredible strength of your support. Knowing J.W.’s best friend needed immediate veterinary care, we sent out an urgent call for veterinary care for the dog on our social media channels. We have never received so many messages of support, offers of dog food, and other items. The generosity of our community blew us away!
While we as an organization took notice of this immense generosity, so did J.W. She saw that she mattered, her beloved pet mattered, and the community was there to rally around them both. Though her faithful companion couldn’t be saved despite our best efforts, the community’s outpouring of compassion showed J.W. something profound: she wasn’t alone anymore.
The community’s kindness and support became the catalyst for her transformation. Through the summer, J.W. continued to work on herself and stayed determined in her goal to find a home of her own. J.W. found a sustainable job and began saving money and setting up her life for success. Through Nest’s programs, we helped connect J.W. to a compassionate and understanding landlord. Our community came together to provide support with donations for some of J.W.’s basic needs for her new apartment. We continue to support J.W.’s goals through our Continue Soaring Program, which checks in with J.W. and continues to be a support network for her as she adjusts to her new living environment. J.W. found the strength to rebuild her life, and we’ve walked with her in partnership every step of the way. Today, J.W. continues to thrive in her new home, connected to vital community resources through Nest because of the generosity of our community.
