Back in April, we celebrated National Volunteer Month with a special article that allowed you to meet 12 of our wonderful volunteers here at Interfaith Community PADS. You got to learn a little bit about what they do, why they volunteer with us, and what they find most rewarding about volunteering.
Today we’re following up on that article to share – in their own words – why they think YOU should consider volunteering at ICPADS too. As the weather gets cooler and our shelter begins to fill up, we could really use the help of more volunteers. So why should you volunteer? Here’s what our own volunteers have to say.
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:16)
Why do you think others should consider volunteering at ICPADS?
Appreciation and Teamwork – Jessica H
“People find greater appreciation with what they DO have when they see how little others have. When we can see that we have far more in common with our guests than we realize, we grow as people and are humbled. Please come for a tour. Come spend a couple of shifts with a staff member. You can see the teamwork up close.”
Great Work in the Community – Carlton S.
“You should definitely consider volunteering at ICPADS because you can do great work in the community. I would say you definitely should volunteer. You won’t regret it.”
Personal Growth – Dina C.
“Not only are you making a difference for others but you’ll find personal growth as well. Being involved with all members of our community makes a community stronger.”
You May Need Help One Day – Sherri
“But for God’s grace, we could all find ourselves in a tough spot like these guests and we’d be glad for some help. The other volunteers I’ve met have been nice and welcoming. Just come give it a try!”
Everyone Should Volunteer – Melissa D
“Everybody should volunteer their time somewhere. Why not at the shelter? You never know when you may be in need of help with something. When you volunteer, be patient. Most of the guests are struggling with a lot more than just being homeless.”
Personal Rewards – Phil J.
“The personal rewards will awe you. They sure do me. Try it, you might like it.”
Interesting People – Luke
“Volunteering at ICPADS is a wonderful way to get to know some interesting people, and also a great way to contribute to the well-being of society. If you’re considering volunteering, I’d encourage you to visit for a night and do it with an open heart and an open mind. You’ll improve the quality of your life and also the lives of the friends you make.”
Flexibility – Kristen N.
“Others should consider volunteering at ICPADS because there is a spot for everyone’s skill. Organizing, listening, cleaning, fundraising, etc. If you’re interested in interacting with our clients, it will grow your sense of what contributes to homelessness, and it will stretch you in ways that you can’t predict or put into words. Volunteering with ICPADS is flexible and can be as little or big of a commitment as you want.”
No Commitment – Ryan E.
“Come and see what we do at ICPADS. You will be amazed at the service we provide the community! Just come and serve dinner and see for yourself. No commitment. Just try it out and see if it is for you. There are so many other needs as well if you are interested. Just ask!”
Many Hands Make Light Work – Ed M.
“If everyone contributes a little, no one has to do it all. Try it; you’ll like it!”
Make a Difference – Deb L.
“You can make a difference in the lives of our guests. It is a rewarding experience. Visit the shelter, meet the staff and other volunteers, and learn about the numerous ways you can help!”
Share Your Gifts – Jennifer F.
“Your help is greatly needed and appreciated at ICPADS. Volunteering here is easy, flexible and fun. God has given us all gifts that he wants us to share with the world – for his glory and our good! Don’t downplay your gifts! Something as simple as doing the dishes at the ICPADS shelter makes a big difference. We all have something to share that can make our community stronger. There is a place for you at ICPADS.”
